Missing Hikers Walk To Safety
Got Lost Overnight In Angeles National Forest

Hikers Safe LOS ANGELES (CBS) -- A pair of day hikers who went missing overnight in the Devil's Canyon area of the Angeles National Forest walked to safety Monday and were reunited with their families.

The young men were reported missing by a relative about 6 p.m. Sunday when they failed to return, said Sgt. Don Bee of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Altadena Station.

The search was conducted near mile marker 50 of Angeles Crest Highway, Bee said, but by late Monday morning, the men walked to safety after backtracking along a trail.

Peter Osborne, about 25, told reporters that he and his 22-year-old friend had set out shortly before noon Sunday on what was to have been a six-mile hike. But they got lost, and along the way, the younger man fell down an embankment and hit his head, Osborne said.

The pair stopped when it got dark, and at daybreak headed back along the trail, where they met up with rescuers, Osborne said.
